Berwick Bank Wind farm update

Onshore Planning Application – 275kV Cable Works

Berwick Bank Wind Farm is an offshore wind project located in the Firth of Forth with a grid connection at Branxton, near Innerwick in East Lothian. As part of our proposals to develop and construct Berwick Bank Wind Farm, we are required to install different elements of onshore transmission infrastructure. This infrastructure will play an essential role in taking clean energy generated from the Wind Farm site offshore, and connecting it to the UK National Grid Network, where it can be used by households and businesses across the country.

East Lothian Council granted Planning Permission in Principle (PPiP) for the projects onshore transmission infrastructure in December 2023 under planning permission reference 23/00162/PPM. We write to inform you that Berwick Bank Wind Farm Ltd have submitted an application under the Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Regulations for the Approval of Matters Specified in Conditions relating to the above permission. This application provides more detailed information regarding our onshore proposals within East Lothian.

The onshore transmission works consists of a number of components and development areas however simplistically involves the key sections of infrastructure :

  1. The installation of 275kV underground cables between the landfall and the onshore substation (The 275kV Cable Works)
  2. The construction of the onshore substation and;
  3. The installation of  400kV  underground cables between the substation and the grid connection point at Branxton (the 400kV Cable Works).

This application relates specifically to the proposed installation of our 275kV underground cables and associated infrastructure, this work mainly consists of temporary works to install buried cables. This application has been validated and you can view these proposals here (click the link and search using the reference25/01386/AMM). Comments on the proposals should be sent to: environment@eastlothian.gov.uk by 30th January 2026.
